Bone-Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHAs)

About BAHAs

Bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA) are designed to treat hearing loss through the utilization of bone conduction of sound vibrations. BAHA systems are recommended for people who have chronic ear infections or allergies, outer or middle ear malformations, or single-sided deafness (unilateral hearing loss).

BAHA systems consist of three components: a titanium fixture, an abutment and/or magnet, and an external sound processor. The titanium implant is surgically placed into the bone behind the patient’s ear, with a tiny abutment placed through the skin, attaching to a microphone and sound processor. BAHA systems take advantage of bone vibrations, allowing sound to travel naturally through the ear canal and inner ear, bypassing the outer and middle ear structures. BAHA systems are not recommended for sensorineural hearing loss or bilateral hearing loss.
