Why a Hearing Test in Lakeland, FL Is About More Than Just Your Hearing

Most people think of a hearing test as something you do when you can’t hear well anymore. The reality is that hearing evaluations serve a much broader purpose — and waiting until hearing loss becomes obvious can mean missing a critical window for early intervention.

Hearing loss is connected to your whole-body health. Research continues to strengthen the link between untreated hearing loss and a range of serious conditions, including:

  • Cognitive decline and dementia — Adults with untreated hearing loss show significantly faster rates of cognitive decline. Treating hearing loss early is one of the most modifiable risk factors for dementia prevention
  • Depression and social isolation — Difficulty following conversations often leads to withdrawal from social activities, which in turn contributes to depression and anxiety
  • Falls and balance problems — Hearing loss affects spatial awareness and has been associated with a higher risk of falls, particularly in older adults
  • Cardiovascular disease — The inner ear is extremely sensitive to blood flow; emerging research links hearing loss to heart disease and poor circulation
  • Diabetes — Diabetic patients experience hearing loss at roughly twice the rate of those without the condition, making regular hearing screenings especially important for this population

Getting tested is the first step to protecting both your hearing and your broader health. A comprehensive hearing evaluation at Aspire Hearing Solutions in Lakeland gives you a clear, accurate picture of your hearing status — and connects you with the right care path whether that means monitoring, hearing aids, tinnitus treatment, balance evaluation, or a specialist referral.

If you haven’t had a hearing test recently, there is no better time. Adults over 50, those exposed to noise at work or through hobbies, and anyone with diabetes or cardiovascular conditions should make annual hearing screenings a standard part of their healthcare routine.

What Happens During a Hearing Test?

When you arrive for your hearing exam, our front office staff will greet you and ask you to fill out several forms, including those that record your personal information, medical history and insurance verification.

When your hearing exam begins, we’ll review key personal information with you and ask you a few questions to discover the specific types of environments where you may be experiencing hearing loss and hearing impairment.

Next, we may look into your ears with an otoscope, a special instrument to see the ear canal and the eardrum, and/or perform one of the tests below.

Audiometric Test

During this hearing test, you’ll be tested using a series of low and high-frequency words to determine your ability to understand verbiage within a short distance (as in a conversation). We’ll also give you several words to repeat. The results will help us determine your percentage of hearing loss, your ability to understand speech and if hearing aids will help you.

Tympanometry

Tympanometry is a hearing test that creates variations of air pressure in the ear canal to checks the condition of the middle ear, the mobility of the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and the conduction bones

OAEs

Acoustically evoked otoacoustic emission testing (OAEs) allows the hearing instrument provider to understand how the outer hair cells of your inner ear are working.
This hearing screening will enable us to determine:

  • Whether or not you have hearing loss
  • The possible cause of hearing loss
  • The degree and type of hearing loss and whether it’s in one or both ears
  • The best treatment options

Your Hearing Test Results

We’ll record the results of your hearing test on a form called an audiogram, which we will review with you. The audiogram reflects your hearing loss in frequencies and decibels. We’ll show you the type, pattern, and degree of hearing loss, as well as the percentage of normal conversational speech that you’re still able to hear. We will then relate these results to your concerns about your hearing.

Next, we’ll consider treatment solutions. You can count on our team to take the time necessary to understand your concerns so that they can provide you with everything you need to make an informed personal decision.

Schedule a hearing test with our trained audiologists and discover how much sound you’ve been missing… and how much more you could be hearing.

Hearing Test FAQs
What Lakeland Patients Ask Most

How long does a hearing test take?

A comprehensive hearing evaluation at Aspire Hearing Solutions typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. This includes your intake interview, the physical ear exam, all diagnostic testing, and the results review conversation. Please plan for the full appointment — we don’t rush the results discussion, because understanding your audiogram is as important as the test itself.

Do I need a referral for a hearing test?

For most patients, no referral is required — you can call or text us directly to schedule. However, Medicare patients should be aware that Medicare requires a physician referral for a covered diagnostic hearing evaluation. If you are a Medicare beneficiary, please ask your primary care physician for a referral before your appointment, or call our office and we can help guide you through the process.

Does insurance cover hearing tests?

Many insurance plans cover diagnostic hearing evaluations, including Medicare (with a referral) and most major PPO plans. Coverage for hearing aids varies separately. Aspire Hearing Solutions has a dedicated Financial page with more information, and our team is happy to help verify your benefits before your visit — call us at 863-450-1179 to ask.

How often should I get my hearing tested?

For adults with no known hearing concerns, we recommend a baseline evaluation and then retesting every one to three years depending on age and noise exposure history. If you are over 60, work in a noisy environment, have diabetes or cardiovascular disease, or have noticed any changes in your hearing, annual testing is recommended. For children, screenings should follow pediatric guidelines — we test patients of all ages at Aspire Hearing Solutions.

What's the difference between a hearing screening and a hearing evaluation?

A screening is a quick pass/fail check — often done at schools or health fairs — that flags whether further testing is needed. A comprehensive hearing evaluation, like we perform at our Lakeland and Winter Haven offices, is a full diagnostic workup that identifies the type, degree, and configuration of your hearing loss across multiple frequencies and documents results on a clinical audiogram. This is what’s needed to determine the right treatment plan.

What if I'm not sure I have hearing loss?

That’s exactly the right time to come in. Many patients who test with us discover mild hearing loss they weren’t aware of — and establishing a baseline now makes it much easier to detect meaningful changes over time. Early detection leads to better outcomes. The test is comfortable, completely painless, and gives you real answers.
